The Black Crescent

Photo Booth

The Self-Portrait Project is a system and method for self-representation using a two-way mirror, camera, and remote control. Since 2009, SPP has been reconceptualizing photo booths in NYC and beyond using a principle of agency over one’s own image as its core tenet, along the way enabling tens of thousands of participants in nine countries to snap over one million portraits. The Black Crescent Self-Portrait Project, the first of its kind, lends agency to the user by transforming their mobile phone into a remote control for the camera, and allowing them to receive their images directly on their device. Below is a selection of Self-Portraits taken in the photo booth since 2017.
